I am researching the Rosser Family from
Cowbridge: Evan Rosser was born at Llancarfan in 1807; he married
Ann Thomas who was born in Coychurch in 1805; any information about
them or where I might find some records that identify them or their
families would be greatly appreciated.

I write you from
Vancouver, Canada, with a request for information.
I have lost track of a
person who I believe resides in the Vale of Glamorgan. His name is
John Best. He and I are great-grandsons of the captain and carpenter
of the Swansea-built barque "Caswell". In 1876, on its first
voyage, there took place a violent mutiny, in which the captain, first
and second mates, and the steward were murdered by Greek and Maltese
crewmen. The surviving British lived under fear of imminent death for
over a month, until they managed to retake the ship, killing two of
the mutineers. Two other mutineers were tried and executed in Cork.
I came in contact with Mr.
Best shortly after my father published a book on the mutiny in 1998. A
new book by an Irish criminologist, Seamus Breathnach, has been
published, called "The Riddle of the Caswell Mutiny"
(Amazon) and I am most interested to learn of Mr. Best's thoughts
about it.
I would be most
appreciative if you could check your phone directory to see if he is
listed in your area.
Thank you for your time. I
hope you are enjoying a busy tourist season, and I hope that one day I
have the chance to be a visitor. My father, Martin, was in the
Canadian navy in WWII, and his frigate was in Moelfre Bay in the days
preceeding D-Day, but he didn't have the chance to do much
sight-seeing!
Yours truly,
Gary McGregor

I now live in Exeter, however I was
born in St Athan (lived in Gilestone Road and my maiden name was
Burnham) I spent a lot of time with other people from Cowbridge during
my school time and teenage times. People who used to live in the High
Street in 1969 went by the name of Thorn(e), father was an officer in
the RAF and his son (Chris) was also in the RAF who was a trainee PTI. I
would love anyone who can remember them or even know where they are now
to contact me, it's Chris that stole my heart when I was a young one, my
first love infact.

My great grandfather was Samuel
Worrall, he is said to have been the Mayor of your lovely town in the
late 1800's or early 1900's.
I have not been able to verify this
fact, and I am working on the family tree.
It would be nice to be able enter
this information if true, but it is something passed down by word of
mouth from Samuel's children and so on to us today.
Can you advise me of any site where
I could look for the information.
Thank you so much
Valerie Rose (nee Worrall)

I wonder if anybody can help
me. For many years I have been researching the history of the Youth
Hostels Association, collecting handbooks, postcards, photographs and
other archives. I am putting together a complete database of the 1100 or
so all-time youth hostels in England and Wales, and have so far found
illustrations for about 800 of them, many of which were obscure and
short-lived. I have several gaps among old South Wales and Wye Valley hostels, and would love to hear from anyone who has memories - and especially pictures to loan - of YHs at Llantwit Major, St Athan, Llwyn-On, Capel-y-Ffin bunglaow and monastery, Cilibion, Hodgston Hill, Ferryside, Forest Lodge, Heol Senni, Llanmadoc, Upper Chapel, Blackbrook, Coedkernew, Dan-y-Graig, Grosmont and Usk. Many of these operated only in the 1930s or 1940s, but possibly you have records of them somewhere. If you can help with any information or in any way (even information about the buildings as they are at present) please email or ring me on 01751 431572 (N Yorks). I should be very glad to return your expenses. John Martin |
